DRD Masters & PhD Full Scholarships for Sub-Saharan Africa 2016


Brief description: For applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record the DRD – Institute of Development Research and Development offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships per year. The scholarship will be taken at University of the Western Cape, South Africa and Ruhr-University of Bochum, Germany

About Scholarship

In order to adequately prepare the next generation of leaders through research-oriented training it is not sufficient to have the possibility to award scholarships to promising candidates from all over Sub-Saharan Africa, but it is also necessary to maintain a strong research focus on the work of the centre and to cooperate closely with other leading universities in the region.

Requirements for application and application procedure

·        Applicants should be from Sub-Sahara Africa

·        Applicants should have an outstanding academic record – at least 70% for your last degree

·        Applicants should apply within 3 years of having completed their previous degree

·        The study must have been completed at an internationally recognized university

·        The previous degree (Baccalaureus or Master) should have been an academic discipline which is related to Development Studies or Public Administration

·        South African students are required to have an honours degree in order to be admitted to a Masters degree course. Other students need the equivalent of a 4 year undergraduate degree

·        Applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English, both written and spoken. This can be TOEFL test or a similar standard test or a letter from an academic institution

·        Work and/or voluntary experience in your field of interest would be a recommendation

·        Women are encouraged to apply

·        Applicants must be able to study fulltime at the UWC for the required period.

MA applicants will have to write a one page paper about 1 of the following 4 topics:

1.     François Bourguignon, a former Chief Economist of the World Bank referred to the “poverty growth inequality triangle”: Discuss this comment, critically evaluating the role of inequality in the current study of development in Africa.

2.     Write critically on perceptions about governance in Sub Saharan Africa.

3.     It has been claimed that climate change could potentially interrupt progress toward a world without hunger. Consider the evidence for this claim and discuss how climate change might impact on food security.

4.     Discuss the relationship between social movements and civil society in a specific SSA country of your choice.

British Chevening Scholarships (UK)
Chevening Scholarships, the UK government’s global scholarship programme, are awarded to outstanding scholars from Chevening-eligible countries around the world. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree. Most Chevening Scholarships cover tuition fees, a living allowance at a set rate (for one individual), an economy class return airfare to the UK, and additional grants to cover essential expenditure.
Eiffel Excellence Scholarships (France)
The Eiffel scholarship program was developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a tool to allow French higher education institutions to attract the best foreign students for master’s and PhD degree programs. Eiffel scholarship-holders receive a monthly allowance and other expenses such as return trip, health insurance and cultural activities. It does not cover tuition fees.
Holland Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students (Netherlands)
The Holland Scholarship, financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, is meant for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to do their bachelor’s or master’s at one of the 48 Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences in Holland. The scholarship amounts to €5,000.
Danish Government Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students (Denmark)
A number of scholarships are being offered each year by the Danish Ministry of Education to fund highly qualified and motivated international students from outside the EU/EEA who wish to pursue full degree higher education programme at participating Danish Universities. The University of Edinburgh offers scholarships to non-EU students who wish to pursue a full-time postgraduate Master’s programme in any subject offered at the University. Each scholarship will have a value of £3,000 and will be tenable for one academic year.
Sheffield Hallam University Transform Together Scholarships (UK)
Transform Together scholarships are open to international and European Union (non UK) students applying to study a full-time postgraduate or undergraduate taught course at Sheffield Hallam University. The scholarships include a full fee waiver (100% discount) for postgraduate courses and half fee waiver (50% discount) for each year of an undergraduate course.
Leiden University Excellence Scholarships (Netherlands)
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is open to outstanding non-EU/EEA students pursuing any MA, MSc and LL.M programmes offered at Leiden University. The scholarships come in the form of the following: €10,000 of the tuition fee, €15,000 of the tuition fee, or total tuition fee minus the home fee.
University of Maastricht High Potential Scholarships (Netherlands)
Maastricht University (UM) offers the UM High Potential Scholarships to talented students from outside the EEA to follow any UM master’s programme or graduate programme for professionals offered at the University, except for School of Business and Economics. Amsterdam Excellence Scholarships (Netherlands)
The Amsterdam Excellence Scholarships (AES) awards scholarships to exceptionally talented students from outside the EU/EEA to pursue eligible Master’s Programmes offered at the University of Amsterdam. The AES is a full scholarship of €25,000 covering tuition and living expenses.
Radboud University Scholarship Programme (Netherlands)
The Radboud Scholarship Programme offers a selected number of talented prospective non-EEA students the opportunity to receive a scholarship to pursue a complete English-taught Master’s degree programme at Radboud University Nijmegen. The scholarship consists of a partial tuition waiver whereby the tuition fee will be waived to the level of an EEA student. In addition, the Radboud Scholarship also covers costs such as for visa, residence permit, health insurance and liability insurance.
Lund University Global Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students (Sweden)
The Lund University Global Scholarship programme is targeted at top academic students who are citizens of countries from outside the EU/EEA (and Switzerland) and who are pursuing a Masters Degree Programme at the University. The scholarships may cover 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the tuition fee. Living costs are not covered.
Chalmers IPOET Scholarships (Sweden)
The Chalmers IPOET Scholarships are open to citizens from non-EU/EEA countries who are required to pay tuition fees and who are applying to Master’s Programmes offered at Chalmers University. The scholarships is a 75% reduction of the tuition fees.
Uppsala IPK Scholarships (Sweden)
The Uppsala University offers the IPK scholarships to first year applicants from outside the EU/EEA who wish to pursue a Master’s Degree Programme offered at the University. The scholarship covers the tuition fee.
Emily Boutmy Scholarships for International Students (France)
Sciences Po created the Emile Boutmy Scholarships after the founder of Sciences Po in order to attract the very best international students from outside of the European Union who are first time applicants and who have been admitted to an Undergraduate or Master’s programme offered at the University. The scholarships can take different forms ranging from €5,000 to €16,000 for 2 years of postgraduate study or €3,000 to €12,300 for 3 years of undergraduate study.
Danish State Tuition Fee Waivers and Scholarships at Roskilde University (Denmark)
A limited number of Danish state tuition fee waivers and scholarships are offered to highly talented students at graduate level, who come from countries outside of the EU/EEA and need a residence permit to study at Roskilde University. The scholarships include a tuition fee waiver and approximately DKK 7,800 per month to cover living expenses in Denmark.

Brief description: The PTDF Scholarship scheme is open for application for Undergraduate, Masters and PhD students to study in Nigeria and Overseas

About Scholarship

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is a parastatal of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources established by Decree 25 of 1973 for the purpose of developing and promoting petroleum technology and for creating the manpower needs of the oil and gas industry through research and training of Nigerians.
Its mission therefore is to train Nigerians to qualify as graduates, professionals, technicians and craftsmen in the field of engineering, geology, science and management in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria or abroad.
To ensure a steadfast implementation of this mandate, PTDF is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for Overseas and in-Country MSc and PhD Scholarships. Awards will be granted for studies in the 2016/2017 academic session in the United Kingdom Germany, Australia, USA and France (Grenoble INP) as well as PTDF upgraded Universities in Nigeria. However, the Undergraduate level will be awarded for studies in Nigeria only on subject areas listed below.

Selection Criteria and Eligibility

A. UNDER GRADUATE (Nigeria Only)
1. Possession of 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO including English Language and Mathematics
2. Must have concluded the 1st year of their study in any of the PTDF upgraded Federal Universities listed above.
3. Must have scored a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on scale of 5 or 4.5 on a scale of 7 in their 1st Year.
4. Must scan and attach a copy of their admission letter
5. Students admitted into the University through Direct Entry i.e. 200 level must have either of the following:
i. Minimum of Upper Credit at the Diploma level
ii. Minimum of 10 points in interim Joint Matriculation Board (I.J.M.B) examination.
iii. Minimum of 8 points at the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (G.C.E).

    1. MSc (OSS and LSS)

      1. A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an Oil and Gas related field OR a 2.2 with oil and gas industry experience
      2. National Youth Service (NYSC) certificate.
      3. Applicants must be computer literate.
      4. Possession of O/level with Credit in English Language; At least C6 in WAEC/SSCE or C4 and above in NECO.
      5. Applicants must not be above 30 years of age.
    Applicants for OSS must be in possession of the following:
      1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (USA).
      2. G.R.E (Graduate Record Examination) (USA).
      3. GMAT – for Management related courses (USA).
      4. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (UK).

      1. Applicants must be in the academics in Nigerian Institutions, teaching an oil and gas related discipline.
      2. Applicants must possess minimum of 2.2 in their first degree and a good second degree certificate.
      3. Applicants must submit a research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than 5 pages) to include: Topic, Introduction, Objective, Methodology and Mode of Data Collection.
      4. Applicants must include a valid admission letter.
      5. Applicants must not be over 40 years of age.
      6. Applicants must include their masters degree project.
